Background of the study
Urban slums in Enugu North Local Government Area present significant challenges to public health due to overcrowding, poor sanitation, and inadequate access to essential services. These environments facilitate the rapid spread of infectious diseases and contribute to chronic health problems among residents (Nwosu, 2023; Ezeani, 2024). This study investigates the link between living conditions in urban slums and public health outcomes, highlighting the complex interplay between socio-economic factors and environmental hazards. Residents of urban slums often face limited access to clean water, proper waste disposal, and healthcare facilities, which exacerbates health risks. The research examines the prevalence of communicable diseases, malnutrition, and mental health issues within these communities. Additionally, the study evaluates the effectiveness of government and non-governmental interventions aimed at improving public health in these areas. By integrating epidemiological data with qualitative insights from affected residents, the research aims to provide a detailed understanding of the public health challenges in urban slums and propose comprehensive strategies for intervention (Nwosu, 2023). Ultimately, the study seeks to inform policy measures that can mitigate the negative health impacts associated with slum living (Ezeani, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Urban slums in Enugu North are plagued by conditions that severely compromise public health, including inadequate sanitation, overcrowding, and insufficient access to medical services. These factors contribute to the high prevalence of infectious diseases, malnutrition, and mental health issues among residents (Nwosu, 2023). Despite efforts by governmental and non-governmental organizations to improve living conditions, progress has been slow due to limited resources and implementation challenges. The adverse health outcomes in these slums not only affect the quality of life of residents but also strain local healthcare systems. This study seeks to investigate the specific public health challenges associated with urban slums in Enugu North and identify effective intervention strategies to address these issues (Ezeani, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

  • To assess the public health conditions in urban slums of Enugu North.

  • To identify the key environmental and socio-economic factors affecting public health.

  • To recommend interventions to improve health outcomes in urban slums.

Research questions:

  • What are the primary public health challenges in urban slums of Enugu North?

  • How do environmental and socio-economic factors contribute to these health challenges?

  • What interventions can effectively improve public health in these areas?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Poor sanitation and overcrowding in urban slums are significantly associated with adverse public health outcomes.

  • H₂: Socio-economic deprivation exacerbates health risks in slum communities.

  • H₃: Targeted public health interventions can significantly improve health conditions in urban slums.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of how urban slum conditions impact public health in Enugu North. The findings will be valuable for health policy-makers, urban planners, and community leaders in designing effective interventions that address the root causes of poor health outcomes. By highlighting the interplay between environmental factors and socio-economic conditions, the research aims to inform strategies that enhance public health and improve the quality of life for residents of urban slums.

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of urban slums on public health in Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State, and does not extend to other urban issues or geographic areas.

Definitions of terms:

  • Urban Slums: Densely populated urban areas characterized by substandard housing and inadequate access to basic services.

  • Public Health: The overall health and well-being of a population, as influenced by social, environmental, and economic factors.

  • Interventions: Actions or strategies implemented to improve health outcomes.
